PRESS RELEASE \u2014 The\u00a0F-14 Tomcat \u201cFast Eagle 102\u201d\u00a0is the sole surviving aircraft from the air-to-air battle and<\/span>\u00a0shoot down of two Libyan Su-22 Fitter aircraft<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0August 19, 1981.<\/span><\/p>\n

While on deployment with the USS Nimitz battle group off the Libyan coast, two VF-41 Black Aces F-14A Tomcats\u00a0encountered two Libyan SU-22 \u201cFitters\u201d while on a routine combat patrol over the Gulf of Sidra.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fast Eagle 102<\/span><\/i>, one of the two F-14 Tomcats on the deck of the\u00a0USS\u00a0Nimitz<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0immediately following the incident<\/span><\/p>\n

The VF-41 Tomcats, call signs \u201cFast Eagle 102\u201d and \u201cFast Eagle 107,\u201d engaged in a dogfight with the SU-22s shooting\u00a0down both Libyan jets. The dogfight between the Tomcats and Fitters marked the first Navy air combat confrontation since\u00a0the Vietnam War and the first ever for the F-14A Tomcat. It was also the first time a variable wing geometry aircraft shot\u00a0down another variable wing geometry aircraft. \u201cFast Eagle 102\u201d (BuNo 160403) was credited with the first kill.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sole surviving aircraft from this engagement \u201cFast Eagle 102\u201d is now located at the Midland Army Air Field Museum<\/span> of the Commemorative Air Force’s (CAF)\u00a0High Sky Wing in Midland, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n

On July 27, 2016, The Flight Deck Veterans Group (FDVG) began the much anticipated restoration project on the F-14\u00a0Tomcat \u201cFast Eagle 102\u201d and returned the aircraft to its former glory. The FDVG members, who were eager and excited to restore\u00a0the F-14, \u00a0worked passionately to preserve naval aviation history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CAF High Sky Wing and The Flight Deck Veterans Group unveiled “Fast Eagle 102” at AIRSHO 2016, in Midland, Texas. In attendance were a number of crew members of the USS Nimitz and Read Admiral (USNRET) David Venlet, who was the backseater on the historic mission.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CAF High Sky Wing is accepting donations to help defray the costs of the restoration project on \u201cFast Eagle 102\u201d. Donations can be\u00a0<\/span>made out to CAF High Sky Wing.<\/span><\/p>\n
